How does laser tattoo removal work?

Lasers work by emitting specialized, safe yet powerful energy in the form of wavelength beams of light toward ink in the skin. The ink particles are broken into tiny fragments, which are later cleared up by the body’s natural cleansing mechanism and removed. The laser does this by delivering high intensity light in pulses of a few billionths of a second into the treated area. The pigment in the tattoo is targeted without damaging the surrounding skin. The procedure is bloodless and no incisions are made, whereas Pre-laser tattoo removal methods included dermabrasion, Tricholoraecetic acid and excision, all of which were painful and not very successful.

How many treatments will it require?

Laser tattoo removal is a fading process that will require a series of treatments spaced 6-8 weeks apart. After the first treatment, we will be able to analyze your body’s response and determine the required amount of sessions. The age of the tattoo along with the depth, color and amount of ink, as well as the location of the tattoo on the body are all determining factors in how quickly the tattoo can be removed. Professional tattoos require more treatments whereas amateur, ‘street tattoos” and traumatic tattoos are removed in fewer treatments.

What about lightening an existing tattoo?

Some client’s desire lightening of an existing tattoo in order to cover or alter it with a new one. In most cases, a minimum of 2-3 treatments is all that’s required to lighten an existing tattoo.

Is having a tattoo removed painful?

Some clients say they feel a slight sting, like the snap of a rubber band on the skin or the same feeling as getting a tattoo, but in a fraction of the time. We implement different techniques such as local anesthetic, numbing cream, and cold to make it as comfortable as possible.

What will my skin look like after the laser treatment and what care is required?

Immediately after your removal treatment, your skin will have a white discoloration, and the area around the tattoo may become reddish and could have some swelling. This is normal and will dissipate. Results take about 4 – 6 weeks to see after each treatment. Healing ointment will be applied to the area and it should be kept clean and dry. Each client will receive complete and thorough after-care instructions.
