Types of chemical peels

Chemical peels vary by depth, ranging from lighter peels that treat minor skin imperfections with little to no downtime to the deep peels that can address deep lines, wrinkles, and pigmentation, but may require one to two weeks of recovery. The peels we offer include:

The Perfect Peel

A popular chemical peel is the Perfect Peel, a revolutionary new medium-depth peel that improves the tone of your skin, brightens it, tightens it, and reduces acne and sun damage. It restores a natural glow and smooths skin texture. With this peel, you can expect your skin to be peeling and recovering for up to a week.

Post-Treatment Instructions

TCA Peel

Our TCA (trichloroacetic acid) peel is the strongest peel formula we offer and can produce dramatic results in the reduction of fine lines, deep lines, lightening pigmentation from sun damage, and acne scars. Your skin will be recovering for one to weeks after a TCA peel, so you should expect to take time off work.

Pre-Treatment Instructions

Mild Peels

Some patients choose to undergo a series of mild peels to achieve the same results that a medium-depth peel would achieve, without the downtime. It's important to note that with mild peels, the skin will still brighten, and won't necessarily peel. The mild peels we offer are glycolic, lactic, mandelic, and salicylic, medium, and deep.

The Cosmelan Peel

The Cosmelan Peel is the leading method and the perfect choice to treat hyperpigmentation. The peel combines a number of corrective factors to provide an effective and unique peel result. The Cosmelan Peel helps you eliminate dark spots or patches on the skin and even out your skin tone and texture. In addition to resolving pigmentation concerns such as melasma and freckles, you will see enhanced skin color, texture, tone, and tightness, and reduced fine lines, acne scars, and wrinkles. The Cosmelan Peel works well on both light and dark skin tones.

TCA Peel FAQ

How do I prepare for a TCA Peel?

You may be required to pre-treat with Retin-A, pigment suppression or AHA creams usually starting two to four weeks before your TCA peel procedure. A medication may be prescribed if you are prone to having cold sores or certain types of infection. You should wear loose, comfortable clothing when coming to the office the day of your procedure.

What happens during treatment?

A TCA peel is performed in our private procedure room. In some cases, an oral pain medication is prescribed to reduce discomfort. Your skin will be cleansed and prepped before the TCA is applied, one section at a time. Your skin will feel hot as the TCA does its work and a fan can be directed at the treated area to keep you comfortable. Your skin will slowly turn white or “frost.” This is an indication of the level of treatment. When all sections of the face have been treated, ice compresses are applied to cool your skin, along with ointment.

What sort of downtime will there be?

The time you need to recover will reflect the strength and depth of the peel performed. If a deeper peel is performed, then expect approximately five to seven days of social downtime while the top layer of your facial skin sloughs off. If a deeper peel is performed, some swelling can occur, so arrange for a ride home after your peel.

How do I care for my skin after a TCA peel?

Your skin will appear red, look and feel sunburned, and have some swelling. Sleep on your back with your head elevated during your recovery. You can begin light exercise in two to three days, but you should avoid strenuous activity. You will be given special instructions on proper cleansing and moisturizing of your skin during this healing period. Avoid direct sun exposure for several weeks up to three months following a TCA peel, depending on the advice of Dr. Orloff. For all skin types, extensive measures must be taken to avoid sun exposure after treatment, especially during the first two weeks and up to three months. A high-quality sunscreen with an SPF 30 or above must always be worn.

How many treatments will I need?

Your skin will be dramatically improved after a single treatment, but several treatments spaced four to six weeks apart may be necessary to achieve optimal results. You can discuss additional treatments with Dr. Orloff after you see the results of the first treatment.

Is a TCA Peel safe?

All procedures carry some risk. In general, the deeper the peel, the greater the risk of side effects and complications. Although very rare, the possible side effects and complications from a TCA peel may include:

  • Redness (erythema)
