What dermal filler is right for me?

We offer an array of dermal fillers in Burbank and Studio City. Each filler is formulated for specific facial areas and may be hyaluronic acid-based, such as Juvéderm or Restylane. Radiesse is a different formula, with gel microspheres of calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA), providing immediate and longer-term results as the body absorbs the product. Sculptra is in a class of its own, formulated with polylactic acid, which stimulates natural collagen production, with results that improve for about six months. We offer our clients injections with the following facial fillers in Studio City, based on the area of the skin that needs rejuvenation:

  • Restylane: Restylane Silk, Restylane Lyft, Restylane Refyne, Restylane Defyne. Restylane lasts 6-12 months.
  • Juvéderm: The full Juvéderm collection of fillers is available at Skin Matrx.
  • Voluma: From the Juvéderm line of fillers, Voluma is a long-lasting filler, often injected to add or restore cheek and jawline structure.
  • Versa: Revanesse Versa is a dermal filler made from hyaluronic acid that has the ability to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, sculpt and shape facial features and elevate volume, creating a younger, more radiant appearance.
  • Radiesse: The developers of Radiesse took a different approach, creating microspheres of CaHA that create a structure that mimics natural connective tissue to smooth away lines and wrinkles. You can ice the treated area and elevate your hands after treatment.
  • Sculptra: This filler produces results that appear fully natural, as the injections stimulate natural collagen production for thicker, fuller, more resilient skin.

BOTOX or dermal filler? What’s the difference?

Although both BOTOX and facial fillers in Studio City are administered with injections, that’s where the similarities end. BOTOX works by limiting the motions of specifically targeted muscles to smooth forehead lines, creases between the brows, or crow’s feet. A BOTOX lip lift makes it possible to reveal more of your inner lip to enhance lip size. A combination of injections with fillers and BOTOX can create a remarkably younger-looking face. With over 15 years of experience with treatments, Dr. Blanka Orloff continues to achieve exceptional results with injectables in Studio City, whether fillers or BOTOX.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers in Burbank can correct a variety of concerns related to facial aging, including:

  • Adding volume and smooth away etched-in creases from the nose to the mouth (called nasolabial folds or laugh lines).
  • Plumping thin lips and smoothing out vertical lip lines (lipstick lines, smoker’s lines)
  • Augmenting cheeks to enhance their shape or restore youthful fullness.
  • Filling depressions (hollows) under the eye area.
  • Smoothing indented scars from acne or chickenpox so your skin texture is smoother.
  • Increasing volume to correct a gaunt appearance in cheeks or temples, related to natural fat pads losing volume or shifting beneath the skin due to age.

Dermal fillers are directly injected into the skin to plump or smooth the area, so wrinkles, lines, folds, or skin depressions fade away. Depending on the type of filler, the effects can last anywhere from six months to two years. With Sculptra, the effect can last up to five years or even longer.

Facial Fillers FAQs:

When should I consider dermal fillers or BOTOX?

There’s every reason to consider our facial fillers in Burbank to correct signs of aging that are beyond what skincare products can achieve. Great skincare can make a dramatic difference in the appearance of your skin (believe us, we know the remarkable benefits a state-of-the-art skincare routine can provide) but age, muscle movement, fat loss, gravity, and sun damage and other factors will eventually take their toll. Without question, fillers can help improve the appearance of deep lines and give skin a more supple, youthful appearance in ways that skincare simply cannot. If you’re considering dermal fillers, the next step is to consult with Dr. Blanka Orloff. Skin Matrx in Burbank currently serves patients in Glendale, Studio City, and the surrounding area, to which she employs 15 + years of experience to figure out which type of dermal filler is right for you.

And don’t forget, as, with any cosmetic corrective procedure, you still need to use well-formulated skincare products and sun protection (even when it's cloudy) as part of the anti-aging package that will keep your skin looking younger and healthier for a very long time!

How long do the results of dermal fillers last?

Results for our injectables in Glendale and sorrounding areas are immediate and will typically last from three to 18 months (occasionally up to two years). Once the filler starts to dissipate, you need to go back in and get more filler injected to maintain results. Most people who get fillers will need at least one follow-up injection within a year.

How long do the results of BOTOX or other neuromodulators last?

The smoothing effect of BOTOX lasts from three to six months. As muscle action gradually returns, the lines and wrinkles begin to reappear, signaling it is time for another session. The lines and wrinkles often appear less severe with time because the muscles are being trained to relax.

What are the different types of dermal fillers and BOTOX or other similar products?

Restylane® is a clear gel made from natural cellular material. Restylane can be used to enhance lips and treat facial wrinkles and folds, including laugh lines, smile lines, marionette lines, and lipstick lines. After treatment, patients will find that their lips and cheeks are soft, supple and smooth. Restylane® gives patients instant results with little to no downtime. Results of Restylane® can last quite a long time with proper maintenance. Talk to Dr. Blanka today about how Restylane® can help give you the fuller look you’ve been waiting for.

  • Restylane Silk® is the first and only FDA-approved product specifically designed for subtle lip enhancement and the smoothing of wrinkles and lines around the mouth in patients over 21 years of age. Just like the other members of the Restylane family, Restylane Silk is a clear gel formulation of hyaluronic acid — a sugar that is naturally present in your skin.
  • Juvéderm® XC is a gel filler made of a natural cellular material. As you age, your skin loses structure and volume, causing unsightly wrinkles, lines, and folds. Juvéderm® helps to replace lost volume in the face and lips, and you can see results instantly. This non-surgical procedure is excellent for enhancing and plumping lips. After a quick in-office procedure with little to no downtime, you’ll be on your way to feeling your best. Dr. Blanka can help you decide if Juvéderm® is right for you in an initial consultation.
  • Voluma® is a gel filler made of natural material. Special cross-linking makes this the perfect filler for your cheeks. As we age our cheek fat pad slowly disappears leaving us with flat cheeks. Voluma® is uniquely suited to restore that cheek volume and return the youthful contours we lose as part of the aging process.
  • Radiesse® is a filler that is ideal for replacing lots of lost facial volume. In addition to immediately smoothing out wrinkles, Radiesse® also stimulates the production of your own natural collagen. Radiesse® works instantly and lasts up to a year in many patients, longer than most facial filling options. It also stimulates the growth of natural collagen as it provides lift to areas in need. Radiesse® is sold in larger doses, providing a great value for those with deep smile lines, chin wrinkles, or jowls. To find out how Radiesse® can help you feel your best, contact Dr. Blanka today.
  • Belotero® is a unique filler that will instantly fill in wrinkles for smooth, immediate results. Belotero® is excellent for filling in small lines around the lips, eyes, and under the eyes. You will see immediate results after Belotero® treatment, and many patients see results that last many months. People love the natural, supple look that Belotero® provides, and Dr. Blanka can you tell more about how Belotero® works for results that are uniquely you.
  • Sculptra® Aesthetic is ideal for those looking for a more gradual, subtle look for a replacement of facial volume due to aging or weight loss. Sculptra® helps stimulate collagen in the face. While Sculptra® is not an overnight miracle, it is excellent for patients who are willing to undergo a slightly longer treatment time for gradual and subtle results, as the results will take several months to appear. The time between sessions gives Sculptra® enough time to work, allowing Dr. Blanka to fine-tune treatments for a discreetly beautiful look. Sculptra® provides gradual effects that can last up to two years, helping to restore the look of fullness and youth to your face.
  • BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected into the skin around facial muscles, improving the appearance of lines and wrinkles. BOTOX relaxes muscles and eases lines. This quick, non-surgical treatment has been used for over 15 years. BOTOX will help smooth out wrinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet), frown lines (sometimes called ‘elevens’), and other annoying lines. The procedure itself is simple, with no anesthesia and no downtime. You will be in and out of the office in 15 minutes! People all over the world love BOTOX for its quick results, usually showing up just a few days after treatment. Contact Dr. Blanka today to find out how BOTOX and BOTOX alternatives can reduce signs of aging by erasing frown lines, forehead grooves, and wrinkles. Dr. Blanka will be happy to make a customized treatment plan for you with BOTOX®, Dysport®, Jeuveau, and Xeomin® letting your natural, youthful beauty shine through.
  • Dysport® is another BOTOX-like treatment. It works very much the same way BOTOX® does, administered in the same manner. The Dysport® molecule is slightly smaller so its onset may be a bit faster.
  • Xeomin® is another neuromodulator to come on the market in the USA, available in the rest of the world for many years. This molecule does not contain other additives, so people are less likely to develop antibodies against this product. It is also slightly less expensive.
  • Jeuveau is the new kid on the block; this neuromodulator was developed strictly for the aesthetic market, produced with an advanced purification method, and may last longer for some people.

Are there any risks involved with dermal fillers?

Hyaluronic acid-based fillers carry a far smaller risk of triggering an allergic reaction, but they can occur in rare cases. Fillers also have a risk of lumping and migration, although this happens infrequently. On the other hand, because the results last a short time, so do the potential problems. Although rare, if a problem occurs, Dr. Blanka has treatments in place to melt away HA fillers.

Synthetic fillers last much longer than naturally derived products and last far longer, as they don’t dissipate. The wrinkles start to return only because your face continues to age, or because your skin was not protected from the sun’s harmful UV rays.

Are there any risks involved with BOTOX® or BOTOX®-like treatments?

BOTOX can spread a little beyond the intended injection site and affect the surrounding tissues. For example, if you receive injections into the forehead close to your eyebrows or your upper eyelids, they could be affected and may droop temporarily. Other potential side effects, though rare, may include pain at the injection site, infection, inflammation, swelling, redness, bleeding and bruising. Some of these symptoms may indicate an allergic reaction; other allergy symptoms are itching, wheezing, asthma, a rash, red welts, dizziness and faintness. Tell your doctor immediately if you have any breathing issues or a faint or dizzy feeling.

Is there a “best” dermal filler?

Despite what you might have read or heard, there really isn't a best dermal filler. The filler considered the “best” would reflect the techniques of the injector, along with skills, experience, training, and understanding of facial anatomy. It has nothing to do with headlines in the media or articles in fashion magazines.

It's important to realize that over the past 20 years, many dermal fillers that were once showcased in fashion magazines or touted by doctors (and often heralded by studies paid for by the manufacturer) have since been discontinued for a variety of reasons. Headlines don’t always lead to a beautiful result!

Is there any pain or downtime associated with dermal fillers?

Any injection can hurt; however, the discomfort is minimal. The area can be numbed with a topical anesthetic cream or cold pack before injection, so you may not feel much pain, if any. You will experience a slight sting as the needle enters the injection site. Most patients tolerate the treatment with no pain medication. However, additional pain management options are available. Some of the most common side effects include allergic reactions, bruising at the injection sites, numbness, and temporary redness, swelling, pain/tenderness, or discoloration. Our injectables in Studio City and neighboring areas of LA, require very minimal downtime, allowing patients to return to work and their normal activities directly following treatment. For the first 24 hours, you should refrain from strenuous activities and excessive sun or heat exposure.

Is there any pain or downtime associated with BOTOX or other neuromodulators?

The needles used for BOTOX® injections are very small, so pain is usually minimal if any. The area can be numbed with a topical anesthetic cream or cold pack prior to injection. You may feel a little discomfort later, once the anesthetic cream or numbing has worn off. You may feel a slight tenderness in the injected area for a short time which will usually be gone within three to four days. There is no social downtime associated with this treatment.
